    <title>THE IDEA

“Funny bowls” originally meant to be a small sound effect patch in MaxMSP to vary a sound of singing bowls.
Those instruments are good to work with, because they have one clear tone that lasts long, which is a perfect
condition to work elaborate new sounds, extend and transform them. Then these piece was developed to be
a bringe between two pieces : “Table Talk” by Alyssa Weinberg and “Homework” by François Sarhan. The first
one has to do with prepared vibraphone, where singing bowls are used, and “Homework” in a gesture/
bodypercussion/speech piece. “Funny bowls” starts with original sound of bowls and ends with gestures and
exclusively artificial sounds. Moreover, after playing 10th step of the piece one can turn the sound in Max on to
just open microphones and play “Homework” amplified. It works great by its own and can be played as a
separate piece of music on the concert. The piece is called funny, so have fun while playing it!
Structure

The piece is comprised of 10 steps. Every step is described in “This event” window and gives instructions
what to do. Here I’ll put the list of steps without describing them detailed:
1) Live sound
2) Prerecorded answer
3) Live sound with harmonics
4) Prerecorded answer
5) Live sound with flanging effect (after this step everything is live)
6) Sudden change to a crispy, rhythmical preset
7) Freeze frame effect
8) Drum machine build up with gesture recognition
9) Gesture playing (Munger effect, drum machine variation and accelerando)
10) Final gesture that ends the piece
11) (Optional) Opens microphones without any sound morphing to perform “Homework”

Technical Requirements and Equipment

• Laptop with MaxMSP version 8.5.6 or higher

• Network connection (for a gesture recognition patch)

• A small diaphragm condenser microphone (one or two)

• Sound card

• PA system

• 7 singing bowls (C’ Cis’, E’, F’, e’’, a’’ as’’). It is written for those, because playback matches with them, but
you can and I highly encourage you to try your own setting.

• Pair hard mallets (wrapped xylo or so.), hard vibraphone mallets, soft mallets, two triangle beaters, bow. You
can vary mallets, prepare bowls if you want. Use coins, aluminium foil etc. (unset title) RSS Feed</title>
